Swedish news programme Rapport interviewed Björn when it became clear that the message recorded by Björn and Benny for Let Poland Be Poland had not been shown in the USA.
Björn assured the interviewer that they stood by the sentiments in their message.
Reporter: It was with this song ABBA was to participate in the American TV-programme Let Poland Be Poland, but the video tape that ABBA sent was never included in the programme. Before the music performance ABBA told what they felt for the Polish people, but Björn Ulvaeus (it was Benny!) also mentioned other countries where oppression against the people is common. This was something the American authorities didn't like. No one at the American TV-company wants to give an explanation today, why the clip with ABBA was excluded. What did you say?
Björn: We said in short that our thoughts are in Poland this evening, but that in many other places all over the world, there is other countries where human rights are violated.
Reporter: Which countries did you mention?
Björn: We mentioned: El Salvador, Chile, Iran and Afghanistan.
Reporter: And this wasn't suitable for the American authorities?
Björn:We had a weak suspicion that it might turn out this way, and it turned out this way in the end.
Reporter: You had counted on this?
Björn: A bit, yes.
Reporter: You are idols for a lot of people all over the world. This is the first time you make a political standpoint. Do you intend to keep on with this? As a pop group?
Björn: I think it's a human standpoint. To stand by with the Polish people, who have it as they have it right now. So I'd say it's a general human standpoint.
Reporter: What else can you think of commenting?
Björn: Yes, if we could come into and in any way get to work with the world peace, we would really like to do it.
Reporter: You get a lot of criticism from Soviet today, that says that ABBA supports America. Can this change your relations with Soviet where you are very popular?
Björn: Of course it can. But this shows that we saw with our both eyes and wanted to say that there are more places in the world with violated human rights.
Reporter: You know now what happened. It became a flop. Would you have done it if you knew it from the start?
Björn: (laughs) No, I don't think so, but as I said earlier, we stood by to hundred per cents for the reasons why we did this (sic).
