Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, more commonly known simply as Swap Shop, was a British children's entertainment programme that was broadcast on Saturday mornings on BBC1 for 146 episodes in six series between 1976 and 1982. It was ground-breaking in many ways: by being live; being nearly three hours in length; and using the phone-in format extensively for the first time on TV. The content of the programme included music, visits from celebrities, competitions, and cartoons, but the main element was that children would offer to swap something they no longer wanted in return for something else.
Series 1, Episode 13
ABBA were standing in a decorated BBC Canteen with Keith Chegwin (Cheggers). As their 'swap', they offer a silver disc for the Greatest Hits album in return for the answer to a question (the name of their home town in Sweden). Frida, Agnetha and Björn each said a few words and Agnetha commented that the album took about three years to record! The Money, Money, Money PROMO was then shown.
The episode was a "Swap of the Pops" special with other guests being Showaddywaddy, Mud, Smokie (who would go on to work with Agnetha on her Wrap Your Arms Around Me album), John Christie, White Rhino, Pussycat (their dreadful Mississippi knocked Dancing Queen from the No.1 spot in the UK and I've never forgiven them for that), The Wurzels, Dr Hook and Britain's only Quackologist!
The programme's successor was Saturday Superstore on which Agnetha and Benny appeared in November 1982.
Keith Chegwin died on 11 December 2017.
