Additional information

ABBA briefly appeared in a TV commercial for the Greatest Hits album aimed at the British market with a voiceover by the fantastic Capital Radio DJ Roger Scott.

The album topped the charts in a number of countries and was Great Britain's best-selling album of 1976.

They appear to be on stage somewhere (might be a studio but probably a theatre) and are seen singing very brief snippets of Waterloo, Mamma Mia, SOS and Fernando.

The filming style looks similar to the Arrival advert later in the year so was possibly the same director.

This clip has been released on the CD/DVD ABBA Deluxe Edition on 16 November 2012.

The location

Thanks to Richard Knight (with some help from Carl Magnus Palm's ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions (2017 expanded and revised edition), it looks like we can identify a filming location for this commercial.  Here's the impressive clues that Richard found to deduce where it was filmed.

  1. The commercial shows the silver sticker on the Greatest Hits LP cover - , this tells us that it is the later re-release of Greatest Hits which included their (then) new single Fernando so it makes sense that the filming was arond the time when it was in the UK charts.  It entered the UK singles chart on 03/04/76.
  2. Due to the voiceover artiste being DJ Roger Scott of London station Capital Radio and, being a UK release, it was for EPIC Records, UK - so it's more than likely it was filmed in London.
  3. Knowing what a tight reign Stig Anderson and/or EPIC would like to hold on budgets for such things, it is doubtful it would run to having a recording console and other recording equipment moved especially to a TV studio or a theatre, for scenery and props, just for a quick TV advert. They’d have done it as quickly and cheaply as possible and therefore used a real recording studio - where all of this equipment was already in situ. It looks as if a black cloth back drop was been rigged behind the piano, but as the camera pans around Björn at 0:32 - we can see a little bit of the recording studio in front of him. There's also a recording engineer ‘extra’ - in a red jumper.
  4. As time was precious to the group - ABBA & Stig would utilise their time the best they could and ‘kill two birds with one stone’ if it were at all possible.
  5. ABBA came to London to record Top of the Pops on the 7 April 1976.  As we know, it was their last Top of the Pops appearance, due to the crazy UK ‘Musician’s Union’ rules - by having foreign acts re-record the backing track of their song. It's likely that ABBA would have recorded the Fernando backing track on the first day of their UK visit (the visit was 6-7 April 1976) and the TV performance the next day on 7 April. A rehearsal would have be needed in the afternoon for Top of the Pops, so there’d be no time to go to a recording studio on the 7th.
  6. A quick look at Carl Magnus Palm's ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions (2017 expanded and revised edition) which tells us the re-recording of Fernando took place at CBS Studios, 31-37 Whitfield Street, London. After ‘pretending’ to re-record Fernando for the UK Union Official in the morning (probably) - ABBA then (after lunch probably) popped on some make-up, changed clothes and a small camera crew was brought into CBS recording studio to knock-out a very quick UK TV commercial for EPIC Records to promote the LP with the new extra track.
  7. Their hair is pretty much the same as on Top of the Pops for Fernando the next day - especially Benny’s hair. Frida parted her hair a little more on the 6th than on the 7th, but it’s basically the same.
  8. Conclusion: The Greatest Hits TV commercial was recorded during the afternoon (probably) of 6 April 1976 at CBS Studios, 31-37 Whitfield Street, London.  NOTE: this was exactly two years after their Eurovision Song Contest triumph. Really impressive detective work - thank you Richard!
  1. Benny who appears to change outfits - firstly seen wearing a red Tshirt under a jacket and later wearing a navy ABBA Tshirt.
  2. Björn wearing a white ABBA Tshirt
