Still billed as "Festfolket", this was the future ABBA's first TV appearance together, produced by Kåge Glimtell.
The two couples enter the studio saloon by pushing through the saloon swing-doors after a western-style introduction by Jan "Tollarparen" Eriksson on the piano (the man with the cigar) - and his orchestra.
Then they perform California, Here I Come. The clip lasts not much longer than a minute and they are singing live in English. You can especially hear Benny's voice during the harmonies.
Then Gunnar 'Siljabloo Nilsson', a well-known Swedish jazz-singer in the 1960s, enters singing Red Roses for a Blue Lady surrounded by Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Anni-Frid who join in the chorus. Then they do a little acting - Agnetha and Frida become 'enchanted' by Gunnar's charms and when Björn taps on Agnetha's shoulder, he gets an elbow in return! Agnetha then pretends to be shy by putting one of her bunches (hair) in her mouth! This has not been broadcast since the original air date.
The clip of California, Here I Come was also broadcast in 2003 on the Swedish TV programme Digiloo and was included on the DVD ABBA Super Troupers released in 2004.
Agnetha - her performance is fun, carefree, enthusiastic and unreserved - especially the final couple of notes.
Also when she puts her hair in her mouth!
California, Here I Come
(Al Jolson/Bud De Sylva/Joseph Meyer), 1924
(First verse not included in the ABBA clip):
When the wintry winds starts blowing
And the snow is starting in the fall
Then my eyes went westward knowing
That's the place that i love best of all
California i've been blue
Since i've been away from you
I can't wait 'till i get blowing
Even now i'm starting in a call
California, Here I Come
Right back where I started from
where bowers of flowers
bloom in the spring
each morning at dawning
birdies sing at everything
a sunkissed miss said, "Don't be late!"
that's why I can hardly wait
open up that golden gate
California, Here I Come
California, Here I Come (yeaaaaaah!)
Right back where I started from
where bowers of flowers
bloom in the spring
each morning at dawning
birdies sing at everything
a sunkissed miss said, "Don't be late!"
that's why I can hardly wait (come on!)
open up (open up! open up!) that golden gate
California, Here I Come,
Red Roses For A Blue Lady
(Sid Tepper / Roy Brodsky)
(Gunnar Siljaboo Nilsson only performed 2 verses, not the whole song featured here)
I want some red roses for a blue lady
Mister florist take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away
I want some red roses for a blue lady
Send them to the sweetest gal in town
And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick
Your best white orchid for her wedding gown
(I want some red roses for a blue lady)
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away
I want some red roses for a blue, blue lady
Send them to the sweetest gal in town
And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick
Your best white orchid for her wedding gown
